Hello Pushcycle!

I love the the fact that I came across your website, well,  by accident! In this troubled and chaotic world, somebody as cool as you are has thought of a great way to  spread peace around the globe. Let's say least "literally" and by bike! Your world tour  is just as amazing  as your stories. Reading your journals has somehow brought me to other parts of the world, too, with your vivid and realistic description of  places, things and people. Sometimes funny with a mix  of suspense and drama.....the bottomline though is you're in it to preach peace.

Take care always and more power!

Hey Pushcycle!!!

what a beautiful and thought provoking account of your stay in Lesotho.
Well
i recieved a text message from my ex-boyfriend in cape town the other
day...he said "I think i've just seen your friend Pushkar in the cycle
race
in Cape Town!!!" I'd told him all about you and our travells together
and he
was standing in town watching the race when he saw a bike loaded with
bags
and  Nepalese plates and flags on it go whizzing past and he knew it
was you
instantly!! isn't that crazy...our lives seem to coincide in so many
ways
Pushkar!! I hope they continue to do so for a long time to come.

well, as you might have guessed, i'm bak in the U.K. things didn't work
out
for me and my boyfriend in South Africa so i came home and have decided
to
study again. I'm applying to do a masters degree in Peace Studies and
Conflict Resolution. I think you'd find it really interesting too!!

I'm sorry i will now miss you in Cape Town. Where are you to next? How
you
doing? Hows the bike? I hope that your health and your mind are as
strong as
ever.

Safe travels

Pushkar-ji,
Namaste!  Your stories of biking in Africa sounded pretty
exhausting.  I
hope you enjoy a trip to Nepal.
I was just eating some dalbhat/sag this evening that I made myself.
Not
bad.  Mas ko dal.  Made with jimbu from Nepal.  The jimbu seems really
essential for mas ko dal.  I have had some jimbu for 2-3 years now, and
it
still seems to be quite good for using as spice.  Even the ghyu and
tori ko
tel I brought from Nepal almost 3 years ago and kept in the frig still
seems
to be quite OK for cooking.
I do not know how long it has been since you were it Nepal.  It
sounds
like conditions there have been getting worse and worse in recent time.
I
get the feeling that there are lots of Nepalis who would like to run
away
from Nepal and settle in some other country.  It's too bad.
Maybe Nepal is not Shangri-La anymore.  But maybe it never was
Shangri-La?  Most likely Shangri-La is inside the mind and not in any
particular place.  Perhaps one way to experience Shangri-La of the mind
is
while sitting on a bicycle seat pedalling forward?

Yours,
Herb

Kanchaa,Pushkar
Today was one of those days in which I told myself many times how lucky I am our country. It also happened to be the King's birthday and therefore, a holiday. My day started with a bike ride at 6.30 in the morning to the meditation center. The early sun was hiding behind some low clouds and the air was fresh. Sister Siliana, the Italian Buddhist nun that guides the morning meditation, remind us in her soft voice how much we depend for our survival on others' care and compassion and how we are obliged to give back the love and kindness we receive from others. I think nowhere could this be more true that in Nepal where the common people have such a selfless heart and no prerequisites to smile to strangers. But what can I tell YOU about beautiful smiles and good hearts when you possess yourself one of each.

After a cappuccino and the news in the Raising Nepal patrika, I rode through Durbar Marg to my guitar lesson. The preparations to celebrate the King's birthday were just starting with some men fixing a full body picture ofthe King at the Annapurna Hotel gate and a group of women in saries holding flowers, hoping to be the first in the long line of happy birthday wishers. By the time I came back from my guitar lesson, so many people were lining up in front of the palace, dressed in their best cloths, that it was impossible to go through. I stood there and watched those people, all looking so cheerful in spite of the burning sun which by this time was almost in the zenith. The one contingent that called my attention the most was a group of dwarf people (those small people with small bodies and big heads) dressingwith nepali traditional dresses. Some of them were so short that when they finally reached the palace's gates, they could not climb the steps on their own and had to be helped by some of the others. Still, they looked so happy and handsome. Imagine, for these people a simple low step is such a big obstacle! Really, how easy some of us have it.When I was riding home I decided to explore a street I did not know and ended up in very narrow paths that eventually took me to the British Council where a photographic exhibit about the Expeditions to Mount Everest ison. I went in and was mesmerized by the old photographs, some dating from the 1920's and 1930's expeditions that ended in failure and some from the victorious expedition in the 50's. The pictures were taken  by Sir Edmund Hillary and by other members of the expeditions. They showed the people and the landscapes of the Himalayas in such an enchanting light and manner . I particularly remember a picture of 5 ough-looking Tibetan man, the expression intheir eyes full of awe, looking intensely into the camera's lens. Another picture I loved depicted a lonely man, a sherpa porter, in contemplation of ahuge glacier: man and nature face to face. The picture was so old that there were scratchesall over it. There was also the picture of a Nepali family in the 1920's...t seems things have not changed so much in Nepal since then! Yes, it made me think that Nepal is a timeless place, an eternal picture. Well, I just wanted to share some of today's moments with you.I hope everything is fine and please,
hos garnus.

Hope you managed to get a good replacement bike.  WHat is your route

cold in winter.
I really enjoyed cycling in USa, most people were friendly and

I came to know that you are in Peru and cruising along through South America.
I am a regular visitor of your website.
I get a lot of info on your website.
last week I watched your interview with Mr. Bijay Kumar.
That was one of the fantastic interviews I have ever witnessed. That encouraged me a lot.
At last, I want to help you ride ahead, how can I do that?

Hello Pushkar,

I recently found your site when I was looking for something else concerning Haiti... I have to tell you, your story immediately pulled me in, and I enjoyed it very much. I am haitian myself, and I would like to assure you that remy is an anomaly. There are such people everywhere in the world, and I would encourage you to give Haiti and haitians another chance! it is most unlikely that you will end up in haiti again, but outside of Port-au-Prince, things are better in some other areas, and in general haitians are known for their true heart. most definitely, due to the economic hardship, and corrupt government, the city especially presents an ugly face. But the same can be said for many third world nations. Regardless of all that, I wish you the best as you continue to travel, and I,m already a fan of your writing. Some years ago now, I spent 4 months in Nepal, and loved it.

Dear Mr. Yatri.

My apology adressing your last name incorrectly.

Its amazing that you are now in Peru while i watched your interview last month on Disha Nirdesh.

"Pushkar Shah" was the name i came across many nepali headlines, but i dont know why I never cared to read them then. But after visiting your website i feel that i missed a lot. I'm sure i wont be missing a single from now on.

I'm a student of Mass Communication in the state of Minnesota, USA. I was always interested to know how it feels travelling abroad and was also interested to learn about the Nepalese community in non-popular countries (like Fiji, etc).

I can only but wish you good luck in all your endeavors.

A MESSAGE FROM PUSHKAR SHAH

On November 28, 1998 I set out from Nepal to travel the world on my bicycle in 11 years, covering 150 countries. My goal was to spread the message of peace and to promote my beloved country of Nepal.

As a young man, I experienced first-hand what it is like to lose a loved one to senseless violence, then as a college student I took great pride in my involvement in the student movement to create democracy, only to become increasingly frustrated over the subsequent years with the apparent failure of my country to achieve the democracy and peace for which I had so yearned. It was my sense of frustration and feeling of helplessness to change the situation of my country from within which compelled me to look beyond the borders of Nepal.

I do not officially represent any organization or government. I represent an ordinary citizen of the world, whose birthplace and homeland happens to be Nepal. I am very proud to be Nepali and no matter where I am in the world, I will always speak with great pride about the exquisite beauty of Nepal, of her people comprised of many ethnic and religious groups and of the timeless culture and heritage of a civilization with a long and fascinating history.

I set out from Nepal a somewhat naïve traveler, but ready and open to face whatever challenges and opportunities the world had waiting for me. I have not been disappointed. While I have dealt with many hardships and challenges, I have also had the unique fortune of experiencing incredible warmth, friendship, hospitality and exchange of knowledge and ideas with people the world over. I am convinced that the goodness of humanity is still alive and well and knows no geographic bounds.

When I started out some 5 years ago, I had some very specific notions as to how my journey would unfold and I have always spoken very candidly and openly about my plans. As with all endeavors in life, it turns out that real life experiences have shaped and directed the many twists and turns of my journey and it is the unplanned and unexpected which have provided some of the most interesting and meaningful, if not always pleasant, experiences of my trip thus far. That being said, I would like to take the opportunity to clarify some issues concerning my journey.

Distances biked: All of my distances reported are in kilometers as indicated by the odometer on my bike. Please note that the date on which I update the mileage on my website does not necessarily indicate the actual date the mileage was achieved. Not realizing that there would be such interest in this degree of detail, I admit that I have not always kept record of exactly how many kilometers I have biked on each and every day of my journey; however the cumulative mileage remains accurate. There have also been instances of mistakes in translation and factual errors which have been published in various media. Unfortunately, it is not possible for me to verify everything before it is published and there are probably some cases where mistakes have been printed that I am still not even aware of. After I have completed the South America portion of my journey, I will take the time to recreate this information on a day to day basis to the very best of my knowledge and recollection and publish it on my website for all to see.

Mode of transportation: At the outset of my journey, it was my intent to rely solely on my bicycle to get from one point to the next. Obviously, there are some cases where it is not possible. There have been other cases in which I have chosen to take an alternative form of transportation. My primary mode of transportation is still bicycle.

Finances: I do not have any official sponsor. I am financed by the kindness and generosity of people I meet along the way. I do not have any credit cards, only a U.S.-based bank checking card which allows me to travel without carrying more cash than I need at the time and can be accessed at ATM’s all over the world. There is no individual or organization which, to my knowledge, has ever gained one single penny profit or commission from any donation to me. I usually live day-to-day and hand-to-mouth, with a very small cash reserve for an unforeseen emergency. Sometimes I am offered complementary food, lodging, or other opportunities which I graciously accept. At other times, I am looking for a safe place to pitch my tent and there have been times when I don’t know how or when I will be able to get my next meal. This is definitely not a “deluxe” trip! I am presently exploring the possibility of finding a reputable “partner” charity for which a portion of the money I raise can be directed toward helping a worthwhile cause in Nepal and which will give me a broader platform from which to raise awareness of my country.

Public demeanor: It has never been my intention to offend anyone by my remarks or anecdotal stories. I now realize that humor is very subjective and not always perceived or appreciated by everyone as intended. I never anticipated that I would become such a public figure and it is obvious at times that “public relations” is not necessarily my forte. If I have offended anyone by any of my remarks, I truly apologize and will try to be more aware of what I say publicly and how it might be perceived. I am a mere human being. I make mistakes just like everyone. I cannot guarantee that I will never make another mistake in my life, but I can assure you that I will always try to improve on my shortcomings.

Okay, so some of my original, altruistic plans have changed a bit. My journey around the world, like life itself, is ever-evolving. There are many forces in the universe which are unpredictable and not in anyone’s control. That is one of the most important lessons I have learned thus far….in some cases you must just “go with the flow” despite the best laid plans. Despite all of the twists and turns and bumps in the proverbial road, the goal of my journey remains unchanged. I continue, in the best way I am able, to spread the message of peace and to promote my beloved country of Nepal.

For those who continue to support me, whether it is a cash donation, a place to spend the night, or simple words of encouragement….. please know that your support is truly appreciated and that I will continue to do my best to make you proud.

I met Pushkar in Heladsburg, CA. on 9.6.02. I was out for a morning ride. He was on his way to SF, CA. He told me about his mission. I knew I had met an incredible person! I asked him to call me when he got close to San Jose. On 9.12.02 he called me from San Jose. He pedaled to my office in Cupertino. Since it was getting late I offered to take him over the hill to Santa Cruz. This way he could get to his next stop without the dangers of riding in the dark all UPHILL on a 120 lb. bike. He graciously accepted. I was the one who got the better deal. He had my complete attention. He told me about his mission of peace. He talked about one sun, one moon, one people. No need for war! He shared his stories of defying death and the wonderful people he's met along the way. He said he would plant all of the 150 flags, from each visited country, on top of Mt. Everest in 2010. He said to come visit him and his family in 2011! I may take him up on that! I left Pushkar with donated jerseys, tights, gloves, sunglasses, Cliff Bars, PowerGels and misc. items. I hope to make his trip more comfortable. I plan on continuing to donate to his incredible journey. I ask all of you to do the same.

 Peace,

I met a very simple man. We had chatted through emails, telephone communications and fax but finally got a chance to meet him last weekend. It was a great pleasure to host him in Portland. Oregonians showed an overwhelming support. We replaced most of his gears.

When I analyze this person's quest, I get completely dumbfounded. To me he is a mirror of my-self; part of my self where I want to be 100% genuine and just give. I asked my self why give to a person that I rarely even know? He is a person who have found a destination in his life. A person who is determined to acheive his dream and that is truly commendable.

During some media interviews, I have been asked why thamel.com is helping him. It this pure publicity? My answer to their questions have been.... He is an example of educated youth, frustated by the craziness of this world. He is a part of all of us. Only thing that is different between him and us is, he is literally doing it. More than Nepal's pride, I see him as a human being desperately seeking for peace of mind. And through his tours around the world, he has been able to share how feels about the world with. As he bet put it "Bicycle is only his Vehicle to his mission."

I heard in Seattle he was able to take his Bicycle to the Space needle. He is the only person in the world that was able to take and ride his bicycle around the Space Needle.
In conclusion, where ever he has gone he simply has brought best of one self!~
Good Luck Peace Rider.
I urge you all to meet this person and just sit and think about him in a silent. His mission, our state of the world and the emotional

Keep cycling, Pushkar. The world needs guys like you to understand that simple people should some time have a say, especially proving that PEACE , benevolence and humanity are stronger than the speudo reasons of the Great and the Big of the world waging feud and wars for their own material interests. I visited the whole world ( except Greenland) incl. beautiful NEPAL not for the panoramic sights but to meet people and learn from them their own solutions to the general world problems.
When you hit FRANCE I wish to help and get you talk from your heart and be helped by those you will address. I am a christian but knowing that your God is the same as mine and , altho He made MAN free, HE is the one for PEACE and LOVE between HIS creatures.
Have a wonderful continuation of your CIRCUMSPIN FOR PEACE and LOVE. I wish you health and a thousands little happinesses all along the New Year.

i got a chance to meet Puskar dai after a long wait. i had only heard about him, but never seen him live. thanx to Puskar dai who visited our LaGuardia Community College, here in New York City and shared his memorable moments with us. he inspired all of us to live in peace and freely. born in a birthplace of Lord Buddha, i greatly appreciate his motto of delivering peace throughout the world, where war is being taken as a only solution of every problem. May his dream come true ... lets be a part of it.
when we were parting, i asked him for his beautiful words. He wrote whether we gonna meet or not later in life ... surely we do, Puskar dai but with glory on your face and the face lighten by the rays of Peace .. "... Two roads diverged in a wood, and I ...I took the one less traveled by, ... And that has made all the difference." (by Robert Frost).
yeah, you are taking the one that we are really proud.
All the best for your upcoming years ... and may your journey be safe and sound ... last but not the least .. "May Peace Prevail on Earth" namaste dai...Pheri Bhetaula (see you again)<;-)

This compign is for the nation, for whole Neplese like, we who are out side the nation fell sometimes very deplored when our nation is not recongnized by the foreigners , sometimes by even our neighbours nationalities.Hopefully this adventure will fetch a kind of recognition thourgh out the world.

World traveling on a bike must bring a mutation in your thinking to see humans in all cultures and countries behave in a same way - angry, jealous, fearful, uncertail, lonely yet indulging, amusing; seeking name, fame, wealth and attachment no matter born in a rich country like America or poor country like Nepal, regradless of color, caste and creet. If you could see this on your journey around the world drop me an email, I will then congratulate you and will appreciate in light of Buddha. Otherwise, only because of the Himalayas the peace will be found in Nepal. But perhaps not in humans any more - it is gone by the royal massacre!
I hope the jouney gives you the insight.
